HP ZD7000 Processor removal/upgrade tutorial

First things first, you’re going to need a small Philips size #1 screwdriver in order to remove the screws on this HP ZD7000 laptop.

Precautions: Make sure your laptop is not plugged in and your battery is removed. Also I am NOT going to be held responsible if you damage your laptop using this tutorial. I highly suggest if you’re not sure of what you’re doing or have never really done this before then to not attempt this and take it to a professional.

As you can see in the picture below, there are eight screws total that you need to remove from the underside of the laptop.

Remove 8 screws

You may need a tad bit of elbow juice to remove that plate. Under there is the processor’s heat sink and fan.

One thing I notice amongst many clients’ laptops is that under this plate is extremely dusty and dirty. I would suggest, since you’ve now got open access to this area to clean it up with a can of compressed air and maybe a brand new small paint brush to brush out that hard to reach areas.

In this next picture you’ll see that we have loosen four screws.

Loosen four screws

Once you loosen the four screws you will gently pull up on the heat sink. Be careful as more often than not the processor gets stuck to the heat sink. Be extremely gentle as you do not want to pull it out at a weird angle and then bend all of the processor pins.

Below you will see what it looks like once you have the heat sink removed.

Unleash latch and remove processor

Once you pull the latch up, the processor can be removed.

In my previous post I said you can pretty much use any P4 processor that has the markings of: CPU speed/512/800.

The processor I pulled out of this unit was a 3.2GHz CPU and I put in a 3.0GHz CPU and it worked fine.

Good luck and please if you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them here.

Thanks for the simple tutorial, great to have a clear reference for these minor changes.

I’m currently experiencing a hard disk issue, (at startup I get a line saying that hard disk failure is imminent ) and I was wondering if you could recommend a replacement hard disk.

I’m using a HP ZD7000 Pentium 4 3.06GHz and would like to get a replacement (and an upgrade if possible) to my Toshiba 60Gb MK6022GAX hard disk.

Any advice on a replacement would be great

    Kind Regards
    Carlo

Be careful pulling the fan cables off the motherboard; if they are tight, you can pull the sockets off the motherboard, effectively trashing the computer. Cleaning surfaces and reapplying thermal paste on the CPU/heatsink is advisable. Service manual is available at http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00218664.pdf

I have a ZD 7000 with a 3.06 533FSB. I looked up the info on this board 356669-001. The one I currently have and it says it supports 533FSB and 800FSB. When I put in a 3.0 Northwood CPU the screen shows HP and Intel then shuts off. I then Talked to HP tech support and they said I needed to use a 3.2 Pentium M at 533 FSB. It does the same thing. Just reboot without ever posting. Is there some jumper on the the motherboard I need to change or something else?

  4. 4 Ryan

    Jeff,

AFAIK there are no jumpers that need to be set. If it just shuts down completely meaning the lights go off and everything else, it could be overheating. I would also check to make sure your memory is good by running Memtest for a few passes.

Hello, i just got my self an Hp zd7000 17 inch note book with brocken screen and it shuts off by its self some times, do you know whitch other note book has the same screen as mine ? and what is it cuasing it to shut off by it self some times ? and can i remove the processor and replace it with 3.4GH or the extreem chip insted of the 3.0GH that i have ?

  6. 6 Abraham

hi Ryan, how can i perform the mem test ? the note book has a crack from one corner to the other in the screen. when i turn it on after a minute or too it shuts off completly. then i have to restart it again

  7. 7 Ryan

    Abraham,

If the unit is shutting down on its own that might indicate overheating. Try taking a can of compressed air and blowing out all the vents.

Normally what I do to find out what exact screen it needs is, I open up the entire laptop, and then find the sticker in which the part number is on. This entails taking apart the entire screen though. Although if it’s already broken and you have a tad bit of experience it wouldn’t hurt to do.

I’ve owned a ZD7000 for about three years now, and recently the fan just goes haywire (runs very loud) when more than one application is running. Sometimes the laptop will just shut off after it seems like the fan is working very hard. I recently purchased a laptop cooler. My laptop doesn’t shut itself off anymore, but the fan still runs very loud after I open up more than one application. I’m glad I found your forum because I think I will clean out the fan and processor. Do you think replacing the fan would help also? Thanks!

hey stieve, yes replacing old parts will help, i have had sony vaio for 6 years now and when i got it it was very quite, but now it sounds like a jet taking off, try to clean the motherboard and replace the fans they are cheep from ebay you know, but remember, these kind of laptops have motherboard and other issues, if it is overheating for some reason then replacing the fans may not cut it.

i have the HP ZD7000 w/ P4 3.2GH CPU. I want to upgrade the cpu to a dual core. Does this motherboard support newer (i.e. dual core) cpus or is the mb too old and i need to stick with my P4?

Got a used zd7168cl about a mo0nth ago. Could not have been happier. Today it suddenly won’t boot. Fires up and I get the following flashing message:

    Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
    Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X Fast Ethernet Controller V.13

    PXE-MOF: Exiting PXE ROM

I tried using the recovery CD but it says there is no hard drive.

    HELP?

    Thank you.

  12. 12 Ryan

    Jarvis,

Your hard drive is bad. I suggest replacing it if you can. Otherwise, take it into a shop that can do it for you.

    Hi,
    Great site!

My ZD 7000 has been overheating most of the time since purchase. recently it went dead apart from the case lights & it wont load up the bios or anything with a totally blank screen. About 1 time in 500 it boots up normally. Tried swapping memory cleaning fans, etc . Any ideas would be appreciated.

To anyone with a zd7000 which has been experiencing over-heating, loud fans, and random shutoffs, I have a few things to add: (disclaimer, do this only at your own risk. The following is what I did, but I will not be responsible for what you do.) If your computer STILL starts up and runs normally for the most part, it’s likely both of the following has occured: 1) the thermal grease between your CPU and heatsink has dried up; 2)the air vents and the fan have been obstructed by too much dust. Solution: 1) take your laptop apart as described above; 2) clean everything thoroughly with canned air or vacuum; 3) get some lint free paper (kimwipes) or cloth, apply acetone to it, and CAREFULLY strip off the remaining thermal compound (it’s the gray silvery stuff) on both the CPU and heat sink–look at the 3rd picture from the top, in the middle you see the CPU with some residual thermal grease on it, 4)go buy yourself some Arctic Silver 5 compound (can get from outpost.com or just google it) and reapply it on the entire surface of the CPU (note, make sure you get a decent thermal grease–I’d hesitate to go for the 2 dollar kind), 5) make sure you reassemble the entire system as it was (remember to secure the four main screws that bolt the heat sink fan unit onto the cpu). I do a lot of heavy graphic design and random shut-offs really annoy the heck out of me–doing this solved my problem.

    Hi

I have 2 HP zd7000, one is zd7260us it has the following components.
But smoke came out by the power supply plug-in and it is dead. I would like to take the processor and the screen and put them on my zd7168cl (this one has a broken screen). Are these items compatible? Replacing the processor is a piece of cake. How do you replace the screen?

    zd7260us

Intel Pentium 4 processor 3.2GHz with HT Technology, 800MHz FSB

    Nvidia GeForce FX Go5700

17.0 inch WSXGA High-Definition BrightView Widescreen wide viewing angle (1680 x 1050) Display

Put the above parts on the following?

    The other is zd7168cl

Intel Pentium 4 processor 3.06 GHz, 533 MHz FSB with HT*

    Nvidia GeForce FX Go5600

    17.0-inch WXGA WVA TFT (1440 x 900) display

    Thanks for the website.

I have had random shut offs and trouble even powering the zd7000 up. Turns out that soldering either the old power jack, or a new one is suppose to solve these issues. (apparently the power jacks are poorly soldered onto the motherboard in HP laptops).

I’m right now trying to open the critter up to try and solder the thing. Still looking for directions on how to get to the power jack.

    Thanks for your site.

Problem with HP zd7000, purchased in 2004
While working with photoshop, computer shut down due to low battery.
    1. attached to mains - no reaction
    2. removed battery and connected to mains - lights below screen flash on, mains indicator light infront ‘on’
    3. pressing on/off button - mains light switches off
    4. connect back to mains and fit battery - lights flash below screen, battery charging and mains indicator lights on
    5. switch computer on - all lights goes off
    6. follow procedures from 2 onwards same reactions.

    MEASURES TAKEN TO RESOLVE PROBLEM

    A. taken computer apart
    B. checked solder joints on mains input socket - resoldered anyway
    C. removed fan assembly - cleaned with compressed air
    D. cleaned off old thermal past and replaced with new
    F. reassemble computer

SWITCHING COMPUTER ON - PROBLEM NOT RESOLVED.

PLEASE ANYBODY WITH ANY OTHER IDEAS?

I’ve owned my ZD7020US since early 2004, and it’s still running like clockwork. I attribute this to my having always used it on a portable folding stand that gives the fans a lot of table clearance. I just wondered if you thought that actually could have made a difference?

I just installed a new motherboard in my zd7380us because compusa told me the video card was burnt and I needed a new motherboard. I finally got the computer to power up but it wont enter any boot sequence, and the screen lit but stayed black. I put a hp driver recovery cd in and after it shutoff and rebooted several times the screen is now white but no information is displayed. Can someone please help me out, and point me in the right direction.

great web site, I have a zd7000 4 years old and i’m having shut downs……….bought (new oem) fans & i’m going to try the fix myself. Thanks for everyone’s help.

We have a zd7000 series and it will not start, HP told me it was the hard drive so I have replaced it today but still can not get a start up. The HD light does not come on when power is turned on. I have cleaned the fans, checked for loose HD and Ram connections. (Before replacing the HD I would see a blinking cursor in the top left corner of the screen, now with new HD the screen is blank but back lit)

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I ahve sadly been the owner of one of these junkers (zd7380us) now for three years….during that time, I have replaced the DC Input jack three times, the motherboard twice, power supply twice…and have now tossed this piece into the trash where it belongs.

HP equipment…never again…the physical design of the motherboard places a junky DC jack right next to the heat sinks for the overheating processor…then they didnt place any support in the area for the jack. Arcing occurs when the jack flexes against the plug, causing the plug connection to arc out and corrode….

Battery life suffers due to varying voltages applied to the system by the combined failure of junk dc connections and poor design placement…

I have now dumped the machine, removing the proccessor for a desktop machine, the HD for a portable USB remote drive so I can save my programs and the RAM is now resident in this IBM T40P…workhorse that I have used for the past three years with ZERO problems…

I know this sounds like a rant, and may be too late for anyone who ahs already purchased one of these junkers…but for those contemplating a HP product…please consider the above and beware of what HP has done to save dollars…JUNK DONT WORK…BTW…I build PC’s for a living and am responsible for 200 servers and workstations…HP now has zero place in any of my project plans….

This is not really a question on the processor itself. It is about the loud fans. they constantly run at high speeds after having the laptop on for more than ten minutes. I pulled them out and they are clean as a whistle. What could be my problem? what can help?

i couldn’t thank you enough if you could answer this for me.

    Thank you!

    I own a HP ze5700 notebook.

It has two fans, the inboard fan cycles on and off, the fan closer to the rear does not seem to operate.

How can I determine that both fans are operating correctly ?

If one or both need to be replaced how do I remove them ?

    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hello,

I have an hppavillion zd7000 and I was experiencing the same problems with the computer randomly shutting off becouse of over heating. This particular computer has 3 fans and the left side didn’t work at all. Just so happens the fan that was bad is attached to the heat sink. I ordered new heat sink from hp. Took the laptop apart and clead with compressed air. Put everything back together. And it went back together as seemless as can be expected. In other words I had no seriorus issues other than it was a total pia to get the wire strips plugged back in with the limited space. Fired the computer up, booted up like it was supposed to them immediately shut down with no rime, reason, or error code. The new heatsink fan runs properly now but the computer will not stay on long enough to diagnose anything.

Please if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I’m down to my wits end and I don’t think a computer repair store is going to be verry happy when I bring this thing in taken apart.

Thanks to any sugestions to come.

    Jeff

What did i mess up? Its not giving me a low battery warning and the lights show that it is connected via the ac adapter. HELP ME PLEASE!! I love this computer!
